We all love long hair at any age, but once we start getting into our 40's really long hair doesn't look as good on us any longer. This doesn't stand true for everyone but most who are just wearing their long hair in a ponytail really need to start looking into a more attractive hair style that is shorter and just as easy to take care of.
Problems with long hair on women over 40 is:
Long hair tends to drag ones features down and usually has less life and no volume. Yet you see women over 40 with hair that has no life but are afraid to cut it. The longer your hair is the heavier its going to be, which if it's all one length your hair will look flat and life less. Its very unattractive for anyone with hair that is long with no life because it can add to your age not take away from it. Another problem is when you take all that time to style it, the style doesn't last more than an hour without tons of product it in. Again too much product will drag your hair down and make it limp. Just throwing your hair into a ponytail cause you don't want to deal with it, doesn't look well on you either.
A great example of a good hair style for women over 40 would be Meg Ryan's A-line Bob. Her hair is naturally curly but when she wears it natural, it works for a 'do' for a night on the town or a busy day at the office. Easy to work with, and it you can wear it at any age even grandmothers in the 60's.
Hairstyles that are A-line with layers and shoulder length with shaggy layers are two very workable styles for today's women over 40. Cuts such as Victoria Beckman are great for the younger crowd but are too harsh for those over 40.
One thing you need to take into account is one's shape of one's face. It becomes a huge factor in finding the right style for you. Don't forget that color is also a factor in your hairstyle as well as lifestyle. Gray hair is great but you don't need to have it with so many choice of colors you can get these days. Covering up your gray isn't considered wrong in today world it has become more of a statement you're too hip to be gray. Covering gray isn't like it used to be, it can be done quickly with too much trouble by a good hairstylist.
Don't make the mistake that all over one color is best because it can age you worse than just leaving in the gray alone. Look for a hairstylist that can explain better what high lights, and or low lights can do to help open up your face making it look younger. It's time to start thinking about having bangs, even if they are just wispy ones because bangs take away from your age not add to it. Parting your hair down the middle and just letting it hang there is just too old for you! Start thinking about actresses you see that are over 40 and you will see that they are changing up their hair styles to look younger. Take pictures with you to your next haircut of anyone who you know to be over 40 with a hairstyle you really like. A good hairstylist will let you know if your hair is right for that cut.
Take the time to start thinking about hairstyles you like, but remember you don't need to go super short either. Not everyone can pull off Jamie Lee Curtis latest pixie cut. Hairstyles are highly personal and based on lots of different factors, talking with your hairstylist about how much time you are willing to take in the morning for a new hairstyle. She/He will be able to help you decide what works for you. Changing up your hairstyle can add life, luster and fun back to your life.
